Gunshots were fired at the Casas del Rio student housing complex on the University of New Mexico’s (UNM) Albuquerque campus early Friday (local time), leaving one person dead and another injured, university authorities said.
The injured individual sustained "non-life-threatening injuries," officials said in a post on X. The suspect remains at large and may still be on campus, they added.
"In the early morning hours of July 25, 2025, UNMPD received a report of gunshots fired at Casas del Rio (Gila), located at 420 Redondo Dr NE in Albuquerque. Responding officers discovered two individuals had been shot."
University of New Mexico has shut down its central Albuquerque campus as a precaution. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident, the university said in a statement.
