NEW DELHI: Rupkamal Kalita, one of the eight individuals present on the yacht in Singapore when singer Zubeen Garg died, arrived at the CBI headquarters on Tuesday to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
A day ago, Assam CM Himanta Sarma had stated that Rupkamal Kalita had informed authorities of his plan to move to Guwahati to assist the investigation.
The remaining seven individuals have not yet indicated willingness to appear before Assam’s Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The CM clarified that Assam Police do not need to travel abroad to question those seven individuals.
“Through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore, evidence gathered by Singapore authorities will be shared with us,” he explained.
“Our request has already been sent to Singapore. Generally, foreign countries do not permit police from another nation to conduct investigations on their soil.”
The SIT has already made four key arrests in connection with the case: North East India festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and singer Amritprabha Mahanta.
On Monday, the SIT also recorded statements from Zubeen’s cousin Rituprayag Garg, studio caretaker Abhimanyu Tanti, domestic help Sadhan Nath, and two female singers. Prior to this, over 55 FIRs had been registered across Assam naming multiple individuals in connection with the singer’s death.
