In a first-of-its-kind move, the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ) has adopted Motion 007 on Soil Security Law , marking the world’s first model legal framework aimed at soil protection .
The motion was co-sponsored by Save Soil (Isha Outreach) along with the Global Center for Environmental Legal Studies at Pace University in the United States, with inputs from Aurora, an Australian soil security think tank.
Praveena Sridhar, chief science and technical officer at Save Soil, said the resolution represents the first formal recognition by a global conservation body of soil security as a foundation for food, water, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
“Resolution 007 is a historic win for soil, and it’s an outcome of hard labor, of love and sweat, for soil from people across the world,” she said.
Following the adoption of the resolution, the IUCN will set up a working group to develop concepts and parameters for an international convention or global legal instrument on soil security.
Reacting to the development, Sadhguru , founder of the Save Soil movement, said on X that the resolution marks a “significant step towards global recognition of the need for holistic, committed protection of soil.”
This will serve as the basis for a Model Soil Security Law , which over 90 member nations will be encouraged to integrate into their national frameworks.
The proposed model law is expected to guide countries in embedding soil protection within agricultural, climate, and restoration policies.
It aims to strengthen legal accountability, support regenerative farming, and secure livelihoods dependent on soil health.
Since its submission in January 2025, Save Soil and its partners have engaged in consultations with representatives from France, Germany, Japan, and Canada, and organised awareness campaigns to promote the need for comprehensive soil protection laws.

Congratulations to the @IUCN Membership for adopting Resolution 007 on a Soil Security Law, and to the proponents, co-sponsors - including Save Soil - supporters, and volunteers who championed this effort at the World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi. This is a significant step… https://t.co/FZsNwhyFZ1
