Author Michelle Frances has revealed how much has been changed from her debut thriller novel The Girlfriend, which has been adapted into a series premiering this week.
Originally published in 2017, this glamorous and twist-filled drama is now heading to Prime Video in the form of a riveting six-part streaming event.
Boasting an all-star cast including Hollywood icon Robin Wright and House of the Dragon's Olivia Cooke, this scandalous story of two feuding women is not to be missed.
Wright, who also directs the series, stars as influential gallery owner and mother Laura, who becomes suspicious when her son Daniel (played by Laurie Davidson) brings home working-class girlfriend Cherry Laine (Cooke).
Thanks to a series of misunderstandings they're soon at each other's throats, but the series poses the question: who was really in the wrong?
Ahead of the series' streaming premiere this Wednesday (10th September), author Frances teased this addictively entertaining adaptation at the show's premiere in London.
"From a technical viewpoint, one of the things which was utterly gobsmacking was how [Wright] would act in a scene, cut, then switch to director and know what needs to be done, then she'll go straight back into acting again," she recalled.
"She's looking into everyone's performance and assessing her own. It was jaw-dropping."
Frances revealed she was able to visit the set "a few times" and was heavily involved in the screenwriting process.
She even managed to sneak into the background as an extra for some scenes, though warned fans who might be looking out for cameos that she is "very blurred".
As for the narrative itself, Frances addressed whether there are any major changes to the original book that might keep readers on their toes.
"There are some extra twists and things like that," she revealed. "When you develop a book for the screen, particularly as it's six episodes, you have to invent a little more story or you have to add twists.
"But the characters are so true to the book, and as is the tone of the story and the dual perspective. So, it was a joy."
With Wright driving the project both in front of and behind the camera, the series is meticulously crafted to showcase the two very different perspectives on this gripping feud.
Fans will undoubtedly be split down the middle when it comes to supporting either Laura or Cherry - find out which side you're on when the show drops this Wednesday.
The Girlfriend premieres Wednesday, 10th September on Prime Video.
