The summer is well and truly over and many Brits will now have their eyes on a winter getaway. While seaside towns are popular for holidays in the warmer months, they also make for great trips away during the chillier and darker days.
Winter visits make for a different atmosphere and are perfect for quiet seaside walks, cosy pubs and fewer crowds. The town of Cromer, located 23 miles north of Norwich, has been dubbed the perfect alternative to more popular locations such as Brighton or Bournemouth. For those after a quieter coastal break during the off-season months, this town in Norfolk could be the perfect location.
The colourful seaside resort boasts sandy beaches, a pier and a host of attractions. The high street is full of art galleries, independent shops and pastel-hued properties.
The Norfolk Coast Path is accessible from Cromer and is the perfect route for families to explore. It offers sweeping views of the ruggest Norfolk coastline. The historic Grade II listed Victorian Pier features the world's last end-of-pier theatre. It shows a number of performances throughout the year, including a Christmas Show, which is always popular among both locals and visitors to the town.
The town is also famous for its Cromer crab, known for their sweet and flavourful meat due to being caught in the chalky waters off the North Norfolk coast. The town celebrates its unique seafood heritage with the annual Cromer and Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival.
Inland, a number of shops, restaurants and pubs can be found in Cromer town centre. It is also home to the 14th century St Peter and Paul church which has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
The Cromer museum is also popular among visitors after a learning experience. The museum gives a fascinating insight into the town's history, including the Cromer Shoal Chalk Bed, which is dubbed "Britain's Great Barrier Reef", and the Government's attempt to blow up the pier in WW2 over fears it could be used as a landing strip by Britain's enemies.
Cromer is also home to a piece of Banksy artwork. It appeared on a sea wall in 2021 and is part of the secretive artist's Great British Spraycation across Norfolk and Suffolk.
In a nod to Cromer's crab industry, it features hermit crabs with one in a shell holding a sign that reads "luxury rentals online" which is thought to refer to housing issues in the area. It was coated in a layer of resin by the local council to shield it from the elements.
Cromer has a number of positive reviews from visitors on TripAdvisor. Many praised the beauty of the town as well as the attractions on offer.

Just great, even if loads of people are using it, there is always space and it is just lovely. Amazing sunsets, facilities, all within easy walking distance - would totally recommend."
Anglian Wanderer added: "Cromer is one of those places I return to time and again, and it never loses its charm. The beach is as beautiful as ever, with wide stretches of sand, fascinating rock pools at low tide, and postcard-worthy sunsets.
"What I love most about Cromer is an unspoiled seaside town full of character, charm, and community. If you want fresh sea air, real coastal beauty, and a town that feels like a well-kept secret, Cromer will win your heart."

"Lots of cute food places and pubs. Very, very clean too. Gorgeous pier which is very well maintained. Beautiful prom to walk along and admire the view out to sea. Spotless beaches. Highly recommended."
