A brave father of three who helped barricade the door to prevent the Manchester synagogue attack on Thursday was hit by a stray bullet. Yoni Finlay sustained an injury to his stomach from either a stray bullet shot by the police or debris after the bullet hit the door. A friend revealed: "We heard Yoni was one of those who was bravely helping to barricade the door from the inside to stop the terrorist gaining entry into the synagogue.

"He was taken to hospital because he was injured either from a stray police bullet or from shrapnel and flying glass caused when the bullet hit the door. We don't know the full details. We don't know how serious he is either but are hoping that he will be ok. He suffered wounds to the side of his stomach below his ribs and around his waist."

Another person who wento the the Heaton Park Synagogue and knew Mr Finlay told the Daily Mail: "My wife saw him being taken into an ambulance on a stretcher.

"As far as I know he's undergoing surgery this evening. We don't yet know how he is but are hoping he'll be OK."

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that two people died in the attack - Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66.

British citizen of Syrian descent Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, tried to force his way inside the synagogue on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, armed with a knife. He was fatally shot by police minutes after stabbing Mr Daulby and Mr Cravitz.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson said one of the victims sustained a gunshot wound, which must have come from the police, as Al Shamie was not carrying a firearm.

He said: "The Home Office Pathologist has advised that he has provisionally determined that one of the deceased victims would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury.

"It is currently believed that the suspect, Jihad Al Shamie, was not in possession of a firearm, and the only shots fired were from GMP's Authorised Firearms Officers as they worked to prevent the offender from entering the synagogue and causing further harm to our Jewish community.

"It follows, therefore, that subject to further forensic examination, this injury may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the urgently required action taken by my officers to bring this vicious attack to an end."
