Elton John has created some of the most iconic pop songs and ballads of the 20th century alongside his long-time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. From heartfelt ballads like 'Your Song' to stadium-filling anthems like 'Rocket Man', their catalogue is widely regarded as a treasure trove of classic music.
But even the greats have a few missteps, and for Elton, one of those is a 1972 hit. 'Crocodile Rock' was a commercial triumph, becoming Elton's first number one in the United States and earning a permanent place in pop culture. Yet, despite its success and enduring fan love, Elton has openly admitted that it was never meant to be taken seriously.
Speaking on the Deeney Talks podcast, hosted by Watford footballer Troy Deeney, he revealed the truth behind the upbeat track: "The last time I have to sing Crocodile Rock I will probably throw a party. It was written as a kind of a joke, like a pastiche."
Elton explained that the song was deliberately playful, a lighthearted homage to the early rock 'n' roll of the 1950s. Its cheerful melody, nostalgic lyrics, and quirky references were all intended to be tongue-in-cheek. Despite this, the public took it to heart, and it quickly became one of his most recognisable hits.
Even though he doesn't personally hold the song in high regard, Elton said he has no intention of depriving fans of the chance to hear it live. "Who am I to say, 'I am not going to play it?'" he said. "Because I play to amuse people and to entertain people."
The legendary singer has always prioritised his audience, and he admits that the joy of performing 'Crocodile Rock' lies more in the crowd's reaction than his own affection for it.
He said at the time: "But I have to say when the last show is done at the end of the tour I will never, ever sing that song again."
In July 2023, Elton John concluded his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour in Stockholm, Sweden, marking the end of his extensive touring career - and, along with it, of 'Crocodile Rock's live performances.
