Baked beans are a staple in many households up and down the UK, proving a popular addition to breakfasts, lunch, and dinners.Cheaply available from any supermarket, and a fair amount of corner shops, and super easy to heat up, it's clear why it's quite a popular item. But instead of simply just heating the beans up, there's one ingredient to add that will make them even tastier.

The food experts at SimplyRecipes recommend adding Worcestershire sauce to your beans. This is easy to do, whether you're heating up canned beans to put on toast or making your own baked beans.

When it comes to homemade baked beans, they write: "My recipe for baked beans includes ketchup and brown sugar, both of which bring in a ton of sweetness, so to cut through that, I like to add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce.

"It adds depth thanks to the umami notes of anchovy and tamarind."

However, making baked beans from scratch can certainly be time-consuming, and is something that you're unlikely to do when wanting a quick and simple mid-week meal.

Luckily, even with canned beans, Worcestershire sauce can still be used to make them just that more delicious. Stephanie Ganz at SimplyRecipes has shared her recipe for the perfect baked beans.

  • Two cans of baked beans
  • One yellow onion, diced
  • One to two garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup of ketchup
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • A tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional: Smoked bacon and/or paprika
Method

Preheat your oven to 108C/350F. Add the beans into a casserole dish, then add in all the other ingredients. You can then top with bacon and/or paprika if adding these to the dish.
