US President Donald Trump has ordered nuclear tests after 33 years. Amid testing by China and Russia, this decision could escalate global tensions and raise questions about the NPT agreement.
US President Donald Trump has ordered his Defense Ministry, the Pentagon, to immediately begin testing nuclear weapons. Trump wrote on the social media platform "Truth Social" that the US needs to conduct nuclear tests on par with Russia and China.
President Trump said, "In light of other countries' testing, I have directed the Department of War to expedite our own testing." It's worth noting that the United States last conducted a nuclear test in Nevada on September 23, 1992, after which then-President George H.W. Bush imposed a moratorium on underground nuclear testing.
Questions raised about the timing of this order by Trump
The timing of Trump's order has raised serious questions, as he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea just a day earlier. Meanwhile, Russia recently tested its nuclear weapons. Trump's decision comes amid heightened global tensions.
Trump made a big claim
Trump claimed that the US has the largest number of nuclear weapons in the world, but according to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Russia has about 5,500 nuclear warheads, while the US has about 5,044.
Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered nuclear strike preparation exercises. The Russian military tested the Yars and Sineva intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), as well as a long-range cruise missile from a Tu-95 bomber. Trump responded to these tests by saying that Putin should focus on ending the war, not on missile tests.
Trump's nuclear test order has sparked global outrage, with experts saying the move could undermine global disarmament efforts and violate the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which the US signed in 1992.
IAEA warns
The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) has warned that if the US resumes testing, it could spark a new arms race. US Senator Elizabeth Warren said, "Trump is making a toy out of nuclear weapons."
Analysts believe that this move by America is in response to the growing nuclear influence of Russia and China, but it could deal a major blow to international peace and stability.
