On Friday, August 1, 2025, the Punjab & Haryana High Court dismissed a plea filed by actress and politician Kangana Ranaut. A defamation case was filed against the actress over her remark on the Farmers' Protest. She had approached the court and asked that the complaint be thrown out.
According to The Times of India, the HC has observed in its detailed order, “There are specific allegations against the petitioner who is a celebrity, that false and defamatory imputations by her in the retweet have dented the respondent’s reputation and lowered her in her own estimation, as also in the eyes of others. Therefore, filing of the complaint to vindicate her rights cannot be termed mala fide.”

A defamation case was filed against Kangana by Mahinder Kau (73) of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda district. In a now-deleted tweet, Kangana had shared a picture of Kau and identified her wrongly as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame. She had tweeted that such women could be hired to protest for Rs. 100.
In February 2022, Bathinda judicial magistrate had issued summons asking Kangana to appear before the court, and that's why the actress had approached the Punjab & Haryana HC.
However, now that her plea has been rejected, Kangana has to face the trial before the local court in Punjab.
