New Delhi, September 8, 2025: While smartphones have made life easier, hidden malware is now threatening millions of users across India. Hackers are targeting users through fake banking pages and suspicious links, stealing money without victims even realizing it. The Ministry of Home Affairs, via its Cyber Dost portal, has issued a warning urging users to stay vigilant.
How the Scam Works-
Hackers send emails or SMS messages pretending to be from banks, courier companies (like Flipkart or Amazon), or government agencies (like the Income Tax Department).
-
These messages contain a link. Clicking it may install a malicious APK or open a fake login page that steals your credentials.
-
Once installed, the malware runs in the background, displaying fake login screens over genuine banking apps. When you enter your user ID, password, or MPIN, this data is sent directly to hackers, who can then transfer money or make online purchases without your knowledge.
Avoid unknown links – Don’t click links from unknown emails, SMS, or WhatsApp messages.
Use official app stores only – Download apps only from Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS). Avoid third-party sources.
Keep devices updated – Regularly update your phone’s OS and apps, especially banking apps. Install trusted antivirus or anti-malware software.
Check app permissions – Be cautious before granting unnecessary permissions like SMS reading or accessibility access.
